Our History

Viking Engineering's history began in August, 2001 when Bob Moe and Carl Johnson combined their oilfield experience of over 55 years to offer consulting services to the industry. After being exposed to “downhole” engineering as practiced at several major and independent oil companies, they felt that linking their varied backgrounds and expertise would be a formula for success.

From deepwater well design off Eastern Canada to tubular optimization and testing for a major Gulf of Mexico deepwater project to the development of a new completion configuration for South Texas, Viking is involved in many of the industry's leading projects. In addition we provide training throughout the world and hold focused training session for various operating companies. In addition to having a world-class downhole materials and  failure analysis department, Viking is a strong believer in applying lessons learned from our failure analysis group back to the design phases and into field practices via our quality assurance department.

Jorge Garduno

Jorge L. GarduÑO


Jorge earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and his Master’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.  He has a broad range of experience in the oil industry with the majority of his experience in deepwater developments and specializes in the areas of Subsea Well Operations, Production Engineering, Flow Assurance, Subsea Engineering, and Operations Readiness.  

Carl K. Johnson

Director of Operations

Carl attended Marietta College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. During his 45 years in the oil and gas industry he has experienced many of the major engineering disciplines related to petroleum operations such as; drilling, completion, production and reservoir engineering, as well as management posts. During the past 15 years he was a co-owner of Viking and developed expertise in critical well tubular design and analysis with special emphasis on deepwater projects. In addition, he has valuable experience in annular pressure annulus, completion analysis, training and failure analysis.


G.R. "Bob" Moe, P.E.

Director of Engineering

Currently serving as Director of Engineering for Viking, a wholly owned subsidiary of GATE, Inc., providing leadership as Viking broadens its role in tubular design for critical well applications. As co-founder of Viking Engineering Bob has been designing and performing structural analysis for offshore and horizontal multi-frac wells.  In his prior assignment as Vice President - Engineering with Oil Technology Services, Inc. (OTS) responsibilities included quality assurance and systems management, and tubular design for drilling, completion, and production of technically complex wells. Prior to OTS, seventeen years of varied experience with a major petroleum producer included quality assurance expertise in the manufacture of down-hole equipment for high pressure and sour gas production, drilling and subsurface operations, and major project planning, scheduling and coordination. Bob earned his BS in CE in 1975 from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and his Master’s in Environmental Engineering from Tulane University in 1992.

Steve Bradley

Director Of Quality Assurance

Over thirty (30) years’ experience as a Quality Professional/Consultant working in the Oil and Gas Industry, with an extensive background in QA/QC inspection, quality system auditing, technical specification writing, and consulting experience associated with a wide array of drilling and completion equipment, services, and quality systems.  His expertise includes drilling and completion equipment, OCTG’s/Line Pipe manufacturing, API & Proprietary connections, inspection, and testing. Currently serving as a technical advisor and liaison on several API committees associated with OCTG, Completion Equipment, Wellheads, and Christmas trees. Active  member  of  API SC18­ “Committee on Quality” (API Spec Q1 and API Spec Q2), API SC5 and voting member on­ Resource Group (RG) on NDT.

Peter Erpelding

Peter Erpelding, P.E.

Tubular Design & Training Team Lead

Peter Erpelding, P.E. is a consulting engineer for Viking Engineering and specializes in mechanical and thermal analysis of drilling and completion equipment.  Mr. Erpelding is heavily involved in engineering projects involving deep water, high pressure, high temperature, and highly corrosive reservoirs.  He has conducted numerous software training courses, and casing/tubing design seminars.  Prior to working for Viking, he spent four years with Schlumberger, and seven years with OTS.  He has an additional seven years of teaching experience in the fields of Reactor Physics, Thermodynamics, and Heat Transfer.  He has served on the faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School, and Johns Hopkins University. 

Mario R. Guerra, P.E. 

Materials Engineering Team Lead

Mario holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri Rolla. He has over 14 years of experience in the areas of metallurgy, corrosion, welding, failure analysis and mechanics. The majority of his experience is in the oil and gas industry working for subsea equipment manufacturers, operators, and prestigious upstream engineering consulting firms. Early in his career he also worked in the metals industry for the world largest aluminum company and for the world largest aerospace company as a Materials & Process Engineer for NASA’s International Space Station Program.

Randy E. Judd

Drilling Operations Team Lead

Randy received his BS in Petroleum Engineering from Texas Tech University and has more than 38 years of experience in the petroleum industry.  He has held multidisiplinary roles in engineering and operations with a primary focus in drilling.  Randy is responsible for analysis of tubular design, BSEE certification preparation, and failure analysis at Viking.

John Hillier

John M. Hillier, P.E.

Drilling & Well Design Team Lead

John has over 35 years of industry experience and graduated from Texas A&M University with a BSME degree.  John’s experience includes drilling, reservoir, production, and regulatory while working for various operators prior to joining Viking.  The vast amount of experience has been in drilling and production in areas ranging from on-shore to deepwater in both domestic and international venues.  

John Greenip

John Greenip, P.E.

Failure Analysis & Connections Team Lead

John graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1966.  John provides technical support and failure analysis for downhole equipment and operations, including HPHT wells, horizontal and extended reach wells, and deep-water applications.  John is a member of SPE, ASME, and Tau Beta Pi.

Piyush "P.C." Shah

Well Modeling Team Lead

P. C.  received a Ph.D. in engineering from California Institute of Technology. He worked for 7 years at major oil companies in R&D related to reservoir and production engineering and subsequently worked at two oil service companies for over 25 years in R&D in the areas of well and formation pressure testing, and thermal modeling of wells undergoing variety of production and injection operations. For last five years he has been analyzing the designs of offshore deep water wells in support of drilling and completion teams at a major oil company.

Pat Maguire

Downhole Equipment Team Lead

Pat received his BS in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Wyoming and has more than 30 years of experience in the oilfield.  Having worked on both the E&P and service sides of the industry in a variety of drilling and completions related roles, both onshore and offshore, Pat has a comprehensive background in this facet of the business with a very strong emphasis on downhole equipment.  His contributions at Viking include equipment evaluations, specializing in deepwater HPHT applications, and tubing and casing analysis.
